Our mission: strengthening the childcare workforce

The mission of SCCIP is to strengthen the childcare workforce across South Carolina by uniting childcare providers under a collaborative, grant-funded initiative that provides standardized staff benefits, incentives, professional development supports, and cost-offset stipends to participating childcare centers. We believe that by investing in our childcare professionals, we are investing in the future of our children and communities.

Addressing critical workforce challenges

Childcare providers across South Carolina face ongoing workforce challenges including staff shortages, high turnover, burnout, inconsistent benefits, and limited funding to reward high performance. Smaller and rural centers are disproportionately impacted, leading to instability in care and reduced access for families.

The South Carolina Childcare Initiative Plan (SCCIP) was developed to address these challenges through collaboration, equity, and shared resources, creating a more stable and supportive environment for everyone.

Tangible benefits for centers and staff

SCCIP makes things better for childcare staff and the centers they work for by focusing on several key program objectives and expected outcomes:

Program objectives:

  • Improve childcare workforce retention and attendance
  • Standardize staff benefits across participating centers
  • Reduce financial strain on childcare providers
  • Increase staff morale, professionalism, and performance
  • Improve quality and continuity of care for children and families

Expected outcomes:

  • Reduced staff turnover
  • Improved attendance and punctuality
  • Increased staff engagement and morale
  • Stronger collaboration among providers
  • Improved program quality statewide

Our vision: advancing equity, access, and inclusion

The ultimate dream or goal for childcare in South Carolina that SCCIP is working towards is to advance equity, access, and inclusion across the early childhood workforce. SCCIP recognizes that systemic inequities have historically limited access to professional development, fair compensation, and workforce supports for many childcare professionals and providers. By fostering collaboration and implementing standardized, equitable practices, we aim to create a thriving childcare ecosystem for all.
